The practical applications of pattern Toi-Gye, and avoidance of the front leg in Sparring

Amity Taekwon-Do Northampton students looked at the practical applications of movements from ITF pattern Toi-Gye Tul (Red Tag pattern), whilst black belt students spent their dedicated lesson working on avoiding front leg kicks and how to counter these in preparation for the British Taekwondo Council (BTC) Championships this Sunday.

The first lesson was split into two segments, with the first half dedicated to practising specific moves from Toi-Gye as fundamental movements and discussing each techniques and their applications. For the second half of the lesson, the students then applied these techniques onto pads in order to gain a better understanding of what they were trying to achieve with each move.

In the black belt only lesson, the students were asked to pad up to work some sparring drills as finishing touches in their training for the BTC Championships. The premise behind these drills was to practise ways of countering the front leg kicks favoured by many TAGB fighters, another Taekwon-Do organisation who will be present at the Championships.
